A long page, a book, or a slide deck is rarely read in one sitting. The browser remembers the URL and nothing else, so coming back means scrolling to find the place again, or guessing which chapter it was.

remember keeps the position in the reader’s own browser and offers it back on the next visit. On a page it is the scroll position and the section; in a book it is the chapter; in a deck it is the slide.

TipTry it on this site

Scroll down this page, go to the Reference, then come back: the site runs the extension on itself and returns you to where you were. Close the tab after scrolling and open the page again to be asked first. The prompt is for a new visit rather than for a move around the site.

Installation

quarto add mcanouil/quarto-remember@1.3.1

This will install the extension under the _extensions subdirectory. If you are using version control, you will want to check in this directory.

Or install it from your editor with Quarto Wizard:

Quick start

filters:

That is the whole of it. Nothing else is required, and every option is optional.

Opt individual pages out when they are not worth resuming:

Where it works

HTML documents, Quarto books, and RevealJS presentations.

Everything is kept in the reader’s browser, in localStorage. Nothing is sent anywhere, and a browser that refuses to store it, a private window among them, turns the feature off.
